What's Your Plan B?
Last week I blogged about the wisdom of expecting the unexpected. It turns out that this is the basic tenet of the chaos theory, a term coined by mathematician James Yorke of the University of Maryland in 1974. The theory is complicated, but boils down to this: "Life is about not always expecting long-term plans to work out, and thinking in terms of short-term plans. You just can't predict what will happen to you on a daily basis."
Or, as I like to think of it, sometimes you get punched in the mouth.
What was your Plan A before cancer punched you in the mouth? What is your Plan B now? Did you embrace Plan B easily, or was it a struggle? Have you come to accept Plan B? What are the gifts and losses of your Plan B?
You're looking at my Plan B right now. Before I got cancer, I never in a million years thought I would blog or be active on Facebook and Twitter. I wanted to write, but didn't have a sense of what I wanted to write about. Now, my goal is to build a supportive community for cancer survivors through this blog, writing, social media and by speaking. I'm especially excited to be presenting seminars and am happy to report that we've rescheduled our symposium (which was canceled due to snow) for February 11th.
I'd really like to know what your Plan B is and how it's working for you. I agree with Dr. Yorke that the most successful people are those who are good at Plan B. Are you one of those people?
